Proper utilization of abilities can very well be the measurement of success in Honkai: Star Rail's hardest content. A well-timed buff combined with a hard-hitting attack will keep a perfect 3-star Forgotten Hall run from becoming another flop, and saving an AOE heal for the best moment can make or break a boss fight. Ultimate abilities make up the heart of the gameplay dynamic, and players should try to learn how to properly manage them to become their best.

As powerful as they are, Ultimates naturally don't come free of charge. Instead of eating up Skill Points, they will use their dedicated resource called Energy, which comes using its dedicated modifier: Energy Regeneration. Honkai: Star Rail is vague about the exact specifics of these important game mechanics, so here is a guide that covers both.

How Does Energy Regeneration Work in Honkai: Star Rail?

To cast an Ultimate, a character will need a full Energy gauge, that is indicated on their Ultimate's icon. Almost every action in combat plays a role in the character's Energy Regeneration, from dealing and taking harm to use Skills and triggering passive Light Cone and Trace effects. Abilities will explicitly say when they do not regenerate Energy, as apparent in Qingque's Skill.

The Energy Regeneration stat directly impacts the speed at which characters may use their Ultimates again by helping the amount of Energy they gain per action. For example, having a 25% bonus to Energy Regeneration, a Basic Attack that generates 20 Energy will instead generate 25 Energy.

Unlike Genshin Impact, players don't have to collect Elemental Particles to earn Energy. Additionally, Energy Regeneration being an actual stat is a lot rarer in Honkai: Star Rail. Players will only be able to see this in Planar Ornaments, character Traces, talents, several Simulated Universe blessings, and stage modifiers in events or Forgotten Hall/Memory of Chaos floors.

Honkai: Star Rail — Character Energy Table

Each character hanging around has different maximum Energy capacities. This ultimately dictates how frequently they may use their Ultimates, using the harder-hitting ones of the higher end of the spectrum. Here are the Energy caps of each of the characters contained in Honkai: Star Rail 1.0.

Players can typically have a much their Ultimates up between 4–6 turns concerning the character and Energy Regeneration stat. Characters with turn resets like Seele can handle getting their Ultimates support much quicker due to being able to take multiple actions per turn.

Tingyun may be the only Support from the 1.0 version who can give Energy to allies. This makes her extremely valuable in scenarios with turn limits. Other characters like Fire Trailblazer will have Energy-boosting effects, however, these usually affect only themselves.
