The intelligence driving CIMON comes from IBM Watson, which processes the robot's AI capabilities for understanding questions. CIMON, relying on ground-based computing for data processing, interacts with the AI cloud system to interpret inquiries, thanks to a seamless connection between space and Earth.
IBM's Matthias Biniok elaborated on the integration, “If CIMON is asked something, the Watson AI converts the audio signal to text, which it then comprehends or interprets. IBM Watson understands context and even the intention behind queries, delivering a tailored spoken dialogue back to the ISS.”
Data transmission to and from the ISS is swift, thanks to its WiFi network and satellite communication systems, with Bernd Rattenbacher explaining how their secure data pathway ensures rapid responses from CIMON even in the depths of space.
