WHY I’D RATHER
I’ll confess: there had been a time when I truly believed in the absolute potency of the suit for getting respect. Crisp shirt, silk tie, and shoes made of leather so shiningly polished that one could see his or her own reflection: there was the armor that would guarantee respect in the workplace or admit one into society's upstairs restaurants.
But then came the Syna World with Syna World Tracksuit, and maybe for a little while, my loyalties were torn.
THE DAY I REALISED THE SUIT WAS OVERRATED
During a meeting. Dressed in the best navy two-piece, I was perspiring under the glare of fluorescent lights. Sitting across me was a man in a state of calm and comfort and confidence-that he could not have acquired sitting with Savile Row tailors because he was dressed in a Syna World Tracksuit.
And here is the thing: he did not look less shown up. He just looked right: satisfactorily one who needed not to try hard.
“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” – Oscar Wilde.
If Wilde is alive today, I guess he will be tweeting about tracksuits!
COMFORT HAS BECOME THE NEW STATUS SYMBOL
Back in the day, being uncomfortable was a prerequisite for being serious. Heavy collars, staid wool trousers, pinching shoes — they spoke: "I suffer, therefore I succeed."
No longer. The Syna World Tracksuit is the one to bring the change. Now it says:
-
"I can look sharp and still breathe."
-
"I can sit through a three-hour meeting without fantasizing about slippers."
-
"I don't have to prove anything — the confidence in me is on this outfit."
"Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have." – Churchill.
I would argue comfortable citizens come really close to that.
GENERATIONAL SHIFTS
I've seen the transformation unfold.
-
Gen-Z: As social currency, they treat the Syna World Tracksuit with respect; it is the outfit of confidence.
-
Millennials: They consider it a step-up from the hoodies of their student days--with a little more sleekness and structure, but still relaxed.
-
Older generations: They were once doubtful, and now they mutter, "Ah, I could wear that on a school run."
This is no mere fad. It is, in fact, a peace treaty between the generations.
WHY THE TRACKSUIT BEATS THE SUIT
Let's examine:
-
Versatility: A suit goes to weddings and eulogies with equal ease. Tracksuits? Everywhere else-and more and more into those spaces too.
-
Maintenance: Take a dried-cleaning bill for a suit; it can pay for a night out for two at a decent restaurant. Tracksuits find their maintenance in wash and drying.
-
Wake-up call: In a suit, you do a performance. In a tracksuit, you get to be yourself.
"Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." – Shakespeare.
Exchange "crown" with "suit," and you get the whole picture.
LITTLE HUMOUR
Now, it paints a gorgeous scene: The first time, you arrive at a dinner date clad in a stiff suit of grey. You look like you're about to get into a dispute over variable mortgages. Then change that up: Instead, you enter with a sleek Syna World Tracksuit. You are relaxed. Openness creeps in. The perfect flow to conversation.
One of them says "I might get the wine list."
The other says: "Lets get pints and laugh ourselves silly."
Guess which one they remember?
BRITISH CONTEXT
Though there has always been an inquisitive relationship between the British and formalwear, the British invented the three-piece suit while at the same time giving birth to the infamous terrace tracksuit culture. The Syna World Tracksuit stands for reconciliation-the midpoint where heritage meets identity of the present.
That is why it lords about in the pubs of Manchester, in the cafes of Brixton, and at the gigs in Liverpool. It glides with Britpop confidence, struts with the comfort of terrace casuals, and sharpens with the edge of Grime.
THE EDITORIAL TRUTH
If anything, the suit is for status; the Syna World Tracksuit is an expression of confidence. That is a delicate shift with shocking magnitude.
"Life isn't about finding yourself. It's about creating yourself." – Bernard Shaw.
And I'd argue that perhaps the process of creation goes a whole lot easier when the pants aren't constricting you.
FASHIONS OF TOMORROW
I don't say the suit has died. The wedding would still need a suit, and so does the funeral. But in everyday instances, the tracksuit has taken a lead.
Because fashion has stopped being an issue of status. Instead, it is a matter of harmony. Clothes that fit an old and a young, an office-goer and a pub-dweller, for all those little hours of existence where life really happens.
And the Syna World Tracksuit offers this harmony in abundance.
FINAL WORD
Back then, the tracksuit to me was casual attire. Now it is culture. It's not something one throws on anymore. It's a choice. A proud choice.
So tomorrow, when I wake up and decide what to put on to present to the world, I know I will forgo the stiff suit. Instead, it will be the very Syna World Tracksuit.
Because style is not about proving you belong. Style is proving you are comfortable where you already are.
And with this outfit, I finally am.
